Old foes
England and France have met many times since the first meeting, a friendly, almost a century ago. In total, the two nations have crossed paths 31 times – nine times in official competition and 23 times in friendlies.
They have had two previous encounters during the World Cup finals – in 1966, they started in the same group – England won that match 2-0 courtesy of a Roger Hunt brace.
They landed in the same group again at Spain 82 and once again England prevailed, beating their French neighbours 3-1 in Bilbao – the late Paul Mariner putting the game to bed late on.
