Eleven injured in attack by gunmen on Delta mosque



At least 11 people were injured on Friday when gunmen attacked a mosque in Ughelli, Delta state.

Residents told the Nigerian News Agency that the attack happened at around 6:47 a.m. Friday morning as Muslim worshipers were performing their morning prayers at the Central Mosque, located along Okoroda Street in Ughelli.

Residents said they were woken by gunshots and screams from the mosque but were too scared to come out.

NAN reports that Delta State Police spokesman Bright Edafe confirmed the attack, saying 11 worshipers were injured.

Residents said that three people were kidnapped by hitmen who are unknown at the time of filing this report.

Edafe said that the police have started an investigation into the incident.

British High Commissioner to Nigeria Catriona Laing in a tweet on Saturday condemned the attack in the “strongest terms” describing it as an act of violence.

“Very disturbing and sad news from the state of Delta about an attack on a mosque in Ughelli. We condemn this act of violence in the strongest terms. Our thoughts are with all those affected,” he tweeted.
