Brazil vs South Korea: The lay of the land
The Seleção boosted by Neymar’s return from injury
Following wins against Serbia and Switzerland, Brazil cruised into their third game against Cameroon, knowing they had already qualified for the Round of 16. Indeed, their minds were squarely focused on the injury sustained by Neymar in the opener against the Serbs, which ultimately resulted in him missing both the match against Switzerland and their eventual loss against Cameroon. That, however, is now in the past as head coach Tite confirmed on Sunday, that their coveted No. 10 will in fact be ready to play against South Korea. Needless to say, that’s great news for a team that just lost Alex Telles and Gabriel Jesus for the remainder of the tournament, but not so great for the Koreans.
Can the Taegeuk Warriors rise once again?
On the back of an outstanding team performance, South Korea were able stun the heavily favored Portuguese in the final game of their group. Indeed, they even served up some ‘Japanesque’ late drama with a classy injury-time goal from Hwang Hee-chan. With the victory, their place in the Last 16 was sealed at the expense of both Uruguay and Ghana who were vying for knockout round spot as well. Now the Koreans must face the world’s No. 1 ranked team and as mentioned before, a side that is about to see the return of their talisman, Neymar. Yet, it would be unfair to say this match is a forgone conclusion. South Korea have World Cup pedigree and more importantly no problem doing the kind of disciplined dog work that’s required when playing against a technically gifted side like Brazil. Expect this one to be a tightly contested affair.
Brazil vs South Korea: The Prediction
As we said above, this one is likely going to be an evenly based affair. With a number of attacking threats spread around the field, South Korea has good reason to feel confident about their ability to ask serious questions of an already depleted Brazilian defense. With both Son and Hwang, there’s a good chance the Koreans are going to find the back of the net on Monday night. On the other hand, Brazil is coming from a loss to Cameroon which we imagine will not have left a good taste in their mouths. Add to that, the idea that Neymar is set to return to the lineup having missed their last two games and you can see where this is going to end. Though we do believe it’s going to be a tight game, we’re going with a 2-1 Brazil win.
Brazil vs South Korea: A little context to consider
Though they are clearly on opposite sides of the spectrum, both teams are very much respected sides in the footballing world. Brazil have played in every World Cup since 1930, but have not reached the final since they last won the title in 2002. Incidentally, that edition of the World Cup was co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. On that note, South Korea are the only Asian country to have ever reached the semi-finals of the World Cup and you may have already guessed it, that was back in 2002 when they were hosting. Where previous meetings are concerned, the nations have met on seven occasions with Brazil winning six times and South Korea once in a friendly in 1999. Their most recent meeting was actually in June of this year in Seol and Brazil rolled to a dominant 5-1 victory.
